Pre-Tanning Preparation

It is important to the overall results of the tan, that the
following steps and measures are undertaken. These
measures ensure smoother and more even application,
better colour development and a longer lasting tan. By
telling the client some of the following advice at the time of
booking, you will ensure each client is able to maximize their
tanning experience.

•  It is vital to the Tanline tan treatment, that their skin is
clean and dry. Soap residue, oil, moisturizer, perfume,
deodorant and makeup will greatly interfere with the
tanning process. So the client needs to avoid these products
prior to tanning.

•  For best results, exfoliating should be done at least 24-48
hours prior to tanning. This is important as the DHA will only
stick to dead skin cells. Do not exfoliate the day of tanning.

•  As with exfoliating, your client should avoid shaving or
waxing on the day of the tan. This is best done 1-2 days
before you tan, to allow dead skin cells to regenerate, and
to stop solution sticking to exposed hair follicles.

•  Perform a quick assessment of the client’s skin.  If your
client has patches of dry skin such as on their elbow, knees
or legs, apply a light coat of the Tanline Body Butter (for very
dry areas) or Tanline Body Lotion (for moderately dry areas)
to the affected area and massage in. This should help even
out the tan, and allow for smoother application.

•  Ask the client to tie their hair up and remove all jewelry or
watches before being sprayed. It is important as they will
block areas from the solution, leaving non tanned areas.
Light blonde and platinum hair may be temporarily
discoloured by the Tanline solution. Whilst this is a temporary
effect, special care should be taken when applying spray
tan to people with this hair type.  Most staining will
disappear after the hair is washed for the first time.

•  To make your clients experience more pleasurable, ensure
that your solution is at room temperature. DO NOT heat the
solution as this will destroy its effectiveness. In addition stand
your client on a small towel whilst spraying. This stops excess
solution falling to the floor and being absorbed by the soles
of the feet.

After the tanning process and dry off are complete, ensure
the client has a change of loose clothes to change into.
Remind them that there will be rub off on clothing and
linen as the tan develops. However, they should not worry as
any excess rub off is easily washed out of sheets and clothes,
in your normal wash.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can clients with sensitive skin use Tanline?
Tanline is suitable for most skin types, with added hydration from
Plantolin, Tanline is the only solution designed with sensitive skin in
mind. However, if your client is concerned that they may have
sensitive skin, it is recommended that they have a patch test 24
hours before their spray tan.

How long do I wait  to shower?
6-8 hours is required for the tan to fully develop, however, the
longer the tan is left on, the better! Most of the active bronzing
occurs during this time, however, some additional bronzing and
colour development continues for 24 hours. Individual skin types
and variables affect the ideal development time, however
remember the longer it can develop, the better. Showering soon
after or “at 6 hours”, blunts and limits the full development of the
tan.

I freckle in the sun, will Tanline cause freckles?
No. There is nothing in the Tanline tanning solution that will cause
more freckles to occur. In fact, in most cases, freckles and
blemishes will become less pronounced because the lighter skin or
less pigmented areas are darkened to help darken and blend skin
colour more evenly.

Does I need sun protection with spray tanning?
Tanline does not contain any sun protection elements. Whilst the
client looks tanned, they will still need sun protection to stop
burning.

How long does it take for a treatment?
Full body treatments should ideally take less than 5 minutes.

How long does the tan last?
Depending on the skin type, a tan will last anywhere between 5 to
14 days. Like a sun achieved tan, the sunless tan will fade
gradually until your next application. Use of Tanline Tan Extender
or Tanline Body Balm, will prolong the life and intensity of the tan.
Daily moisturising and skin hydration is important for tan
maintenance.

Does it turn the skin orange?
No! In the past, self-tanners gave many individuals an unnatural
orange glow and caused streaking. These undesirable results were
caused by improper or ineffective application techniques, in
addition to the use of food dyes in tanning solution. Applying
creams and lotions by hand usually results in excessive amounts
being absorbed into the skin, leaving the person with and orange
tinge to the skin. Unnatural dark spots may also appear in dry or
thick-skinned areas such as elbows, knees, and knuckles because
these dryer skin areas have a tendency to absorb more tanning
cream. Tanline’s light application system, combined with our
unique formula ensures no orange undertones; leaving each client
with a healthy sun kissed glow.

Do people with hair on their legs/arms, develop an uneven tan
where hair is present?
No. The mist can penetrate past the hair to achieve the same
result. If a client whishes to shave or wax prior to their tanning
treatment, this must be done 2 days prior to tanning to achieve
best results. Full Tanline training is recommended, as it addresses
the issue of application methods and hair growth.

Will it make the user feel sticky?
No. As the treatment is applied the client should feel initially sticky
as the DHA, a sugar compound, attaches to the skin. As the clients
skin dries, this feeling should subside leaving the skin hydrated,
nourished and refreshed.

What if the solution rubs off on my clothes?
Always recommend clients to wear baggy clothes after
application, to minimize the amount of solution wearing off before
full development. However, if rub off occurs on bed sheets or
clothes, they can be laundered in your normal wash. Tanline
should not stain, due to the natural components and no food dyes.
